The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has made a significant stride in the fight against drug trafficking with the interception of 7,217.7 kilograms of cannabis sativa and 362 packs of Tramaking tablets. These drugs, valued at a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦117,587,405, were seized during intelligence-led operations in Ogun State, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to safeguarding national health and security.
Addressing the media on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Customs House in Abeokuta, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller James Ojo, detailed the operation’s scale and success. The seizure included 403 sacks and 6,504 parcels of cannabis sativa, which were intercepted between October 13 and November 12, 2024. The illicit drugs were abandoned in various locations including the Abeokuta axis, Agbawo/Igankoto area in Yewa North Local Government, and the Imeko Afon axis.
“The Customs Service remains steadfast in its mission to disrupt drug smuggling operations and protect the public from harmful substances,” Comptroller Ojo stated, acknowledging the alarming rise in drug trafficking activities but assuring the public of the Command’s resolve to combat the menace. He credited the success of the operation to the collaboration between the NCS intelligence units, sister security agencies, and local informants.
Following established procedures, the seized items were handed over to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Command, CN Olusegun Adeyeye, for further investigation and legal action. This handover demonstrates the NCS’s commitment to transparency and upholding the rule of law.
Comptroller Ojo also commended the leadership and support provided by the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, which has strengthened the Command’s operations and enhanced its efficiency.
The CAC concluded by reaffirming the NCS Ogun I Area Command’s dedication to ensuring the safety, security, and health of Nigerians, calling for continued public support in the fight against drug trafficking and other forms of smuggling. The NCS urged citizens to provide credible information to aid in creating a safer, drug-free Nigeria.
