Nigerian Navy @69: Naval Sailing Club Celebrates Anniversary With Thrilling Boat Race

The Navy Sailing Club marked a significant milestone on Wednesday 28th May, 2025 as it hosted the NN 69th anniversary with boat race of the Nigerian Navy, a historic event that showcased the NN dedication to water sports and camaraderie among its members. Captain A.F. Adewuyi, Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club, expressed his excitement and gratitude during his opening remarks at the event, highlighting the importance of this year’s race as it was solely organized by the Nigerian Navy Senate Claw.

“This event is a remarkable one in the history of the Nigerian Navy and the Navy Sailing Club,” said Capt. Adewuyi. He acknowledged the support of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for providing the necessary logistics and resources to ensure the success of the race. The Commodore also emphasized the need for continued support from Naval Headquarters for repairs on some of the club’s boats, which include LASER, GP-14, Osprey boats, and kayaks.

The Navy Senate Claw currently maintains 38 boats, but many require urgent repairs. “We are in dire need of a standard decking,” Capt. Adewuyi noted, referring to the club’s current wooden decking that demands constant maintenance. His call for assistance was echoed by Rear Admiral M.G. Owame, Flight Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, who has been a strong supporter of the Navy Senate Claw.

The event was well-coordinated, thanks to Rear Admiral A.O. Oguleye and his organizing committee, along with officials from the Sailing Federation who contributed to the successful execution of the race. Capt. Adewuyi praised the sailors for their impressive performance and sportsmanship, stating that the standard witnessed at the event was above average.

Special guest Rear Admiral K.A. Amauche also addressed attendees, reflecting on his 30 years of experience in naval service and reiterating the allure of maritime activities.

As the day progressed, excitement filled the air with anticipation for the races ahead. Capt. Adewuyi extended his congratulations in advance to all participants and wished them good luck in their pursuit of medals.

The event not only celebrated the achievements of the Nigerian Navy but also reinforced its commitment to promoting water sports among its personnel. As sailors prepared to hit the waters, it was clear that this anniversary celebration would be remembered for years to come.
